The Lloydminster RCMP, along with Lloydminster Citizens on Patrol, (C.O.P.), have teamed up to help holiday shoppers be aware of potential frauds, specifically gift card scams that can take place via phone or e-mail. RCMP have seen an increase in calls for service involving the purchase of gift cards that can be used as a form of payment to a scammer. During the holiday season and into the new year, police and C.O.P. volunteers will be placing small stickers and placards on various gift card displays and checkout areas inside local businesses within Lloydminster. These stickers contain helpful information for the public, including tips on what to do if you are approached via phone or e-mail to provide gift cards as payment for a service.

“We are reminding the public that groups such as the Canada Revenue Agency would never accept gift cards as a form of payment,” said Const. Tyler Plant of the Lloydminster RCMP. “Many scams and frauds appear sophisticated or legit at first glance, but it is important to remind people to always be suspicious and to not send gift card information to people you don’t know.”

The Lloydminster RCMP and Lloydminster C.O.P. wish to thank all local businesses who have supported this effort to prevent fraud.
