Pollom: Stanlie Pollom of Lloydminster, Alberta, passed away after a brief illness, surrounded by his family, during the morning of January 31, 2024, at the age of 86 years. Stanlie was born in St. Paul, Alberta on the family farm, the youngest of a large, blended family. Stanlie’s father passed while he was an infant and he was raised by his mom and older sisters Martha and Alice, who called him “her baby”. He met and married Doreen in Wainwright, Alberta in 1962. Stanlie’s work had the family move numerous times, before settling in Grande Cache, Alberta for more than 25 years, where he worked at the local coal mine and power generating plant. After retirement, Stanlie and Doreen returned to the prairies, first Derwent, then Wainwright, with Stanlie spending his last six months in Lloydminster, near his son Jason and his family. Stanlie was a hardworking, humble man of many talents. He was proud of the fact that he worked his entire life, over sixty years in the workforce, with the only exception of one two-week period in his early life, when he was working the rigs. His first job was hauling water and firewood for $.50 a day for the schoolhouse built on their land. When he was twelve years old, Stanlie and his mom seeded their farm, with a 30 horsepower tractor and an eight-foot seeder. He drilled many water wells with his brothers, starting with horse powered boring drills. He was naturally and skillfully talented at designing, building and fixing any type of mechanical system, including changing numerous engines and transmissions, all by himself, in his Kenworth, he named “Oscar”. He loved his family, Scotch and ice cream. He loved guns, camping and mechanic magazines. He loved cars and trucks, owning more than forty during his lifetime. He was also a man of incredible physical strength and had many colorful stories to go along with it. Through all this, he was a gentle, patient man, devoted to his wife, who was always at his side during their sixty-year marriage.
