The City of Lloydminster and Alberta RCMP have partnered with Bike Index for bike registration with the goal of reuniting people with stolen bikes.
Bike Index is a non-profit bike registry that helps reunite people with their stolen bikes and help spread awareness about how to protect your bike.
Sgt. Brad Mouland, operations support NCO with the Lloydminster RCMP, says the more people that use the Bike Index, the more successful it can be.
“Essentially, with the bike index, we work with the City of Lloydminster and the bylaw team on the bike index program, they collect the bikes, they have a storage of bikes.”
“(It’s) all in the citizens’ hands on the success of the program. “
“If a person’s found a bike that isn’t there’s, they can search the serial number to see if it was stolen, there’s a lot of good features.”
Mouland says it’s important to get people to sign up and work with the program. He also says it’s important to get people to report the stolen bikes.
“We’d like people to report their bikes being stole, no matter how big or small they think the theft is, people write down or are aware of the serial number, take pictures of the bike.”
Mouland says the Lloydminster RCMP has seen a high amount of bike thefts recently.
“We always recommend people take some steps to secure their bikes, like getting a bike lock, don’t leave your bike outside unattended.”
Registration for Bike Index is free and can be done online at BikeIndex.Org. Bike Index has 1,295,000 catalogued bikes, 1,680 community partners and tens of thousands of daily searches.
