A Public Health Agency of Canada update provided today shows one Listeria case out of 18 in the country is in Alberta.
The cases stem from contaminated plant-based milk which has been recalled by Health Canada since July 8. There are 18 separate products, a full list can be found on the Heath Canada website. They include products with expiry dates on and up too October 4, 2024.
Of the 18 cases, one is in Alberta, four are in Quebec, one is in Nova Scotia and 12 are in Ontario.
Two deaths have been linked to the outbreak and 13 others have been hospitalized.
According to the government agency symptoms include:
- fever
- nausea
- cramps
- diarrhea
- vomiting
- headache
- constipation
- muscle aches
In severe cases, the bacteria can spread to the nervous system (the brain, spinal cord and nerves). Symptoms of severe listeriosis include:
- stiff neck
- confusion
- headache
- loss of balance
These symptoms can occur between 3-70 after being exposed to Listeria.
You are encouraged to seek medical attention if you believe you have been exposed and are suffering symptoms.
