The Meridian Source received this Letter to the Editor regarding cellphone bans in Saskatchewan schools on Sept. 6, 2024
The Saskatchewan government has banned cellphone use in school, and I don’t agree!
This is like killing house flies with a ball peen hammer. This is overkill by big brother to a small problem that should be handled by the homeroom teacher.
I am not advocating the chaos that would happen if students were talking on their phones while the teacher was trying to give the lesson. However, the teacher must have control in the classroom.
Here is the thing … there are about 12 years for a child to get out of school and graduate to a mature responsible person. Every new freedom comes with more responsibility, like having a phone, driver’s licence, bank accounts with credit cards etc. People use cellphones not just to communicate with friends but also to access a vast amount of information relevant to their classes.
Cellphone use in school
Teachers and students together could find a way to incorporate the cellphones for the following:
- Communicating with parents and/or employees is often necessary
- Day planners and schedules are being used on cellphones, which could eliminate unnecessary calls
Students need to be taught at a young age that school time is for learning, not for texting, messaging, paying games, TikTok and much more.
It is a part of growing up and being responsible and thoughtful of others around them.
They have, for the most part, become responsible young adults. Taking away cellphones during school time will not help that situation.
In my opinion, the “No cellphone policy” will not work.
