I’m coming to the defence of all the pets that cannot defend themselves.
Being a pet owner is no easy feat. You realize quickly the demands of an animal are constant and never ending. But for me, it has been a rewarding experience, and I can never imagine my life without my cat.
I constantly hear stories about people getting an animal then returning it to the shelter, for my cat, that was his story until we picked him up. Even as recently as yesterday I got a call about a cat being dumped by the Tim Hortons off 75 Ave. This poor little orange kitten was dumped by a car that drove away as soon as it could. The shelter and other local rescues around town couldn’t take the poor little kitten as they were already at or over capacity.
I couldn’t imagine doing that to my animal, or any animal for that matter. The kitten was scared and didn’t know what was going on, meowing into the air screaming out for someone. Thankfully, someone was able to come and get the kitten. Hopefully they will get a vet visit and find a home with people that care. I couldn’t imagine leaving a child out like that to fend for itself, but for some reason, we do it to animals.
We live in a world where people overbreed animals for attempted profits and dump the animals that don’t sell. Unfixed strays also add to the ever-growing population. Or maybe they get an animal for a present, Christmas, birthday, whatever it may be, and it isn’t a fit for the family. Getting an animal of any kind should be a carefully considered decision, and at no point should you dump the animal, it depends on you not only for food and water, but for love and attention as well.
Get your animal fixed and find the right one for your family or don’t get one, animals deserve compassion as much as humans do.
