Canada Post ordered to return to work

The Canada Post strike is on pause after the federal government ordered employees return to work.

Labour Minister Steve MacKinnon asked the Canada Industrial Relations Board to prepare a Canada Post ‘back to work order’ on Dec. 13.

Both Canada Post and Canadian Union of Postal Workers will operate under the terms of the existing collective agreement until May 22, 2025 (or until the dispute is settled).

“I will appoint an Industrial Inquiry Commission to examine the issues preventing the resolution of the current labour dispute,” said MacKinnon. “I will direct the commissioner to provide recommendations by May 15, 2025, on how new collective bargaining agreements can be reached.”

If things open up again it will take several days before the backlog of mail is cleared.

“Canadians cannot continue to bear the consequences of this impasse. Our priority is to restore postal services while ensuring a fair balance between the rights of workers, those of the employer, but also those of Canadians,” MacKinnon said.

“While this provides a temporary solution, the government’s priority is to get the parties back on track to resolve the dispute and reach agreements.”
