The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has issued a 72-hour strike notice. This legal step puts Canada Post on notice for possible labor action by Nov. 15, if negotiations fail to progress.
The union represents approximately 50,000 postal employees in urban and rural sectors. It has expressed dissatisfaction over wages, safety standards, and job security measures.
CUPW emphasized Canada Post’s offers have fallen short after nearly a year of talks, especially concerning wage adjustments to address inflation. Additionally, they don’t adequately address working conditions for rural and suburban carriers. The union argues those carriers face challenges like increased vehicle maintenance and mileage costs.
In response, Canada Post acknowledged the notice, emphasizing its desire to reach a resolution that serves employees and customers. Canada Post has presented proposals to enhance employee benefits while addressing the organization’s financial constraints.
However, the postal service is seeking a more flexible and sustainable delivery model, including options for seven-day parcel service. They believe it is necessary to meet growing e-commerce demands. Canada Post has noted the potential impact of a strike, especially as the busy holiday season approaches, urging the union to consider these broader implications.
Both sides remain in talks, with Canada Post urging the importance of a deal to avoid any disruptions. Customers can stay updated via Canada Post’s announcements, which promise prompt notification if service interruptions become likely.
Further information is available from the official statements on CUPW’s site and Canada Post’s news release.
