The County of Vermilion River issued a fire advisory for the area.

The advisory was issued just days after dry conditions contributed to a fast-moving stubble fire near Highway 619.

The fire broke out just before 4 p.m. on Monday (April 14) and spread quickly in high winds. Kitscoty Fire Department and County assets responded first. Crews from Paradise Valley joined under mutual aid.

The fire threatened oil tanks and pump jacks. Firefighters battled flames on the fire’s head and flanks to stop it from spreading.

Local farmers and oilfield workers helped control the fire, which was put out just before 6 p.m. No one was hurt and the cause is not suspicious.

Additionally, the county issued the advisory to reduce wildfire risks. Active burn permits remain valid, but no new ones will be issued.

People must check old burn sites to make sure fires are out. Fireworks and exploding targets are not allowed.

Meanwhile, campfires, gas appliances, and briquette barbeques are still okay.

Kirk Hughes, director of protective service and emergency management, urged people to “fire smart” their land.

He warned about dry conditions and wind forecasted for the week.

The county will update the advisory as things change.
