Council considered the proclamation and what impact neighbours have on the community.
“This was brought forward to recognize neighbours and the social connection we can create by getting together and speaking and just getting to know your neighbour,” said Mike van der Torre, director of community services.
For residents in Vermilion, it’s a short distance to neighbours.
“Getting to know your neighbour, I think it’s an easy task in the Town of Vermilion. It doesn’t take long to get to your neighbour or the whole town in a short period of time,” said Coun. Robert Pulyk.
“The Town of Vermilion provides a block party kit, so for anyone who wants to do a little block party, there is a kit available to get things kick started for your group.”
The kit was something council highlighted in their discussions.
“I actually used the block party kit for New Year’s, it’s a fantastic kit. You give $100 to the town, and then if you don’t break anything, you get $100 back, so there’s no cost to you,” said Coun. Paul Conlon.
For Conlon and his neighbours, the program was a resounding success.
“Fantastic program they put together for that, and it brought our neighbours closer together and everybody wants to do it again next year,” he said.
Following a successful council motion, council proclaimed Vermilion Neighbour Day to be May 28.
Residents are encouraged to get out and know the people around them, whether that be using a block party kit or attending the Open Oven Night.
