Pottery draws smiles and crowd at museum

People lined up for the Lloydminster Potters Guild‘s spring sale on May 4 at the Lloydminster Museum and Archives.

The sale is the biggest fundraiser for the guild, according to president Kaylee Anderson.

“We make glazes in house and bring in speakers, buy some products and test new products,” said Anderson. “Funds from the sale go back to our operating costs.”

Visitors had a wide range of items to choose from.

“Anything from mugs to casserole dishes, spoons, vases, charcuterie boards, trays and catchall trays,” said Anderson, noting pottery can help bring calm and focus.

“It’s therapeutic. You get to play in mud and be able to relax,” she said.

“The ability to just focus on a single task and kind of let the world go away.”

Teacher proud of her students

Longtime potter Eleanor Shaw said the day was a success.

“It’s just fun. It’s relaxing and you get beautiful stuff from it,” said Shaw. “It’s really hit a high point the last few years.”

Shaw has been doing pottery for more than 20 years and teaching for more than 10. She enjoyed seeing the crowd.

“I’ve taught probably three-quarters of the potters here,” said Shaw. “It’s absolutely wonderful to see everyone here, everybody is a lover of pottery.”

Shaw said the students’ progress makes her proud. She loves teaching and has no plans to stop any time soon.

“It’s wonderful to see all our former students and how much they’ve progressed. They’re well past the teachers now,” she said. “I know there’s potential teachers out there when I retire but I don’t plan on doing that for a while.”

Although the guild is currently full and has a waiting list, Anderson encourages interested individuals to contact them through their social media.
