Lloydminster council has approved a contract extension for external auditors.

At the June 9 council meeting, council had the opportunity to discuss the one-year extension of WLS LLP Chartered Professional Accountants performing its audit.

The city first entered into a three-year agreement with WLS back in 2021.

“It was a three-year award with two optional years, subject to approval,” said Mayor Gerald Aalbers.

The item will go out for a request for proposal next year.

“It will go out mid next fall or next year and we’ll see where it goes,” he said.

Coun. Michael Diachuk spoke to the work the auditor has been doing with the city.

“I think we’ve been happy with the work we’ve had with the current group that does our auditing,” he said.

He says different companies giving different perspectives on their audit can be important.

“I know in talking with organizations from time to time, they change it up because different auditors come in and see things differently,” said Diachuk. “They might look at a different angle.”

Aalbers pointed out being bi-provincial means they have more reports to submit.

“We do have to supply two additional reports,” he said. “One to the Saskatchewan Municipal Annual Expenditures Report and the second to the Alberta Financial Return. I think that’s often overlooked by people in our community that we do end up answering to two different governments on our expenditures.”

Council voted in favour of reappointing WLS to perform an audit on the city’s 2025 consolidated financial statements and provincial reports.
