QUÉBEC — A Quebec minister has resigned amid an uproar over a recently passed law that imposes a new payment system on the province’s doctors.

Social Services Minister Lionel Carmant announced his resignation from the governing party this morning, accompanied by Premier François Legault.

Carmant’s daughter, a physician, has published an open letter criticizing the new law, which ties part of doctors’ remuneration to performance targets.

Carmant, also a physician, says the last few weeks have been difficult and he is choosing to prioritize his family.

Legault, a personal friend of Carmant, says he understands the decision and the importance of putting family first.

Carmant will remain an Independent member of the provincial legislature.
