On Friday, police anticipated ongoing road closures throughout the region as callers continued to report multiple collisions and hazardous conditions.
In the Wood Buffalo region, several major routes are currently closed or restricted:
- Highway 63: Northbound travel is closed from Wandering River to Fort McMurray.
- Highway 63: Both northbound and southbound travel are affected between south of Marianna Lake and Fort McMurray.
- Highway 881: Both directions are affected north of Imperial Mills following a reported collision.
Mounties say emergency response times may be delayed due to a high volume of calls involving stranded motorists and crashes.
“Alberta RCMP do not recommend any travel in these areas,” the force said in a news release.
Officials are advising anyone who becomes stranded to remain with their vehicle. While emergency crews, tow trucks, and snowplows are active in the area, police say the combination of blowing snow and icy roads has made travel treacherous.
Travellers are reminded to carry emergency kits including blankets, food, and water, and are urged to postpone any non-essential trips until conditions improve.
Motorists can check 511 Alberta for the latest updates on road closures and highway conditions.
