Albertans will soon have one less card to worry about in their wallets.
Starting July 2, the provincial government will begin issuing redesigned driver’s licences and identification cards that integrate personal health numbers and Canadian citizenship markers.

The initiative aims to eliminate the need for paper Alberta Health Care cards over time, streamline access to provincial programs, and reduce identity fraud through enhanced security features.
“These redesigned cards are more than a visual update,” Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, said in a statement. “They are a practical improvement that will make life easier for Albertans.”
To transition to the combined card, residents must provide proof of their legal entitlement to be in Canada when applying for a new card or renewing an existing one. Those confirmed as Canadian citizens will receive a “CAN” marker on the top right corner of the card.
The provincial government confirmed there is no additional cost to Albertans for the updated cards.
Justin Wright, Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services, said integrating health numbers will streamline how information connects across the provincial health-care system, making patient care more efficient.
The rollout will take place in two phases:
- Phase One: Registry agents will begin verifying legal presence and Alberta Health Care eligibility in person. Confirmed citizens and permanent residents will receive cards with their personal health number printed on the back. This phase also introduces free ID cards with integrated health numbers for youth aged 12 to 13.
- Phase Two: The rollout will expand to all remaining eligible residents, and the free card program will be extended to all children under 14, with optional photo and signature features.
Eligible non-citizens will still be able to obtain licences and ID cards. The province is offering a one-time, 60-day grace period for individuals who need extra time to gather the required legal documentation.
Residents looking to add their health number to a new or renewed card must bring their current Alberta Health Care card, a valid ID, and proof of legal entitlement to a registry agent.
