Bonnyville RCMP responded to a report of an assault with a weapon on Feb. 12 at approximately 7:30 p.m. Police say the incident stemmed from an earlier altercation between the parties involved.

According to a preliminary investigation, several men forced their way into a residence where the homeowner was assaulted with a weapon by a male suspect. During the struggle, the homeowner reportedly obtained a weapon and caused serious injury to one of the intruders.

The suspects then seized the weapon and fled to a vehicle. Police say the homeowner followed them outside and discharged a firearm at the vehicle, causing damage.

Stephen Ray Van Hecke, 54, of Bonnyville, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Bonnyville on May 19.

The homeowner, 52-year-old Marc Hamilton Heney, is facing several charges, including uttering threats and seven firearm-related offences. He was also released on conditions and is set to appear in court on May 26.

Both men were treated for their injuries at separate hospitals and have since been released.

The investigation remains ongoing.
