Mitch Cherry, a former student, teacher and administrator within the division, officially steps into the principal role following the departure of outgoing principal Sue Grams.
Division officials credited Grams with building a strong foundation of student achievement and school culture during her tenure.

Cherry takes the helm during a period of significant growth and change for the elementary school.
St. Mary’s recently launched a nutrition program providing free breakfast and lunch to all students and the school is preparing to roll out a flexible, adaptive kindergarten program.
New school playground fundraising outpaced expectations, with construction starting as early as next school year.
For Cherry, the appointment represents both a professional milestone and a personal homecoming.
“Becoming a principal in LCSD is truly a dream come true for me,” Cherry said, noting that he is now raising his own three children in the community where he grew up.
“Being born and raised in Lloydminster gives me a unique perspective and a deep commitment to providing the very best educational experience for all children and families.”
Cherry will focus on expanding existing school initiatives, prioritizing student well-being and individualized learning.
“As a parent of three young children, I understand firsthand that every child learns and develops differently,” he said. “I am especially excited about continuing to innovate within St. Mary’s, starting with our adaptive kindergarten program that is responsive to both the educational and emotional needs of each student.”
LCSD director of education Glenda Kary backs the appointment, praising Cherry’s deep roots and relationship-driven approach.
“Mitch is a passionate Catholic educator whose leadership is rooted in relationships, service and a deep commitment to student success,” Kary said. “With innovative programming, enhanced student nutrition, and a vibrant school community, the future is incredibly bright for St. Mary’s Elementary.”
