Tonight’s Border City Showdown cattle show is a free, outdoor public event with no admission fee.
This competitive steer and heifer jackpot features top stakes: $5,000 for champions and $3,500 for reserve champions tonight.
The showdown kicks off under the lights at 7 p.m., but organizers encourage attendees to arrive early.
The Grace United Church food booth, located just south of the grandstand, will be open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. serving hamburgers, hot dogs, taco-in-a-bag, poutine, fries and its famous homemade pie with ice cream. Cash, debit and credit will be accepted.
A dedicated committee organized this event in just 25 days to bring competitive cattle shows back to the fair.
Lloyd Ex general manager Jackie Tomayer said scheduling the event tonight accommodates the busy summer agricultural circuit.
“We’re doing it the night before the fair so that these exhibitors can then carry on to Calgary and make sure they can get to Calgary in time to compete in the shows in Calgary,” Tomayer said.
Organizers hope the pre-fair showdown will become a regular fixture for the region’s livestock exhibitors in the years to come.
“It was a really dedicated group of individuals that made this happen,” Tomayer said. “We’re really happy to be hosting it.”
