Over 25 years, the tournament has grown to support local families facing high medical costs, bringing organizers closer to their $2-million goal.

“It started with (giving to) children with cancer, but we realized that if we’re helping parents, we’re helping kids, too,” said committee member Donica Schneider. “It allows them to be together as a family while going through treatment, travelling, or dealing with medical expenses.”

Participants grow their hair year-round for the tournament’s final-day head-shaving auction, which generates thousands of dollars for local families alongside a lot of smiles.

For local players, the tournament’s tight-knit atmosphere keeps them returning year after year. Clint Gomersall, who has played in the tournament for a decade across various teams, noted that existing teams rarely give up their tournament spots.

“No one’s serious, no one’s angry,” Gomersall said. “You come out for the love of the game, to hang out, have fun and support your community. You see next generations coming in — guys I’ve played against for years now have 17-year-old kids out on the field. It’s just more family adding to the family that’s already here.”

Organizers credited the longevity and success of the event to sustained backing from local businesses, volunteers and ball players.
