The proclamation has been made, a poppy proclamation to be exact.
The poppy proclamation means Nov. 5 to Nov. 11 is the time to be preparing for Remembrance Day and a chance to buy a poppy.
Money raised from the poppy campaign goes directly to supporting the Royal Canadian Legion #39 in Lloydminster.
“It’s an important fundraiser for us, the money that we raised from the poppies stay in our legion and it’s distributed through veterans,” said Scott Gorman, legion president.
Poppys will be available around Lloydminster.
“We’ll have them in different stores all over Lloyd, on both sides of the border, you can support it that way or you know you can come directly to the legion.” Said Gorman.
Lloydminster Mayor Gerald Aalbers says the poppy is an important symbol.
“By wearing a poppy, it also pays significant recognition to those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice,” he said.
The poppy proclamation kicks off the countdown to Remembrance Day.
“The proclamation today (Oct. 22) is so important, it really is the beginning of poppy sales and commemorates the Remembrance Day on November 11,” said Aalbers. “Remembrance Day is very near and dear to the legion as well as to veterans and others including myself and our community, we’re very appreciative of the work the legion does each and every day in our community.”
Aalbers says it’s important to honour those who fought for Canada’s freedom.
“This year it’s going to be even more important because the people that sacrifice their lives for this nation are going to be honoured on the 11th and it’s important to attend Remembrance Day and encourage people then to vote on November 13th in municipal elections to honour those people that have made the sacrifice for freedom that we have to vote in this country,” he explained.
Poppy’s will be available for sale in Lloydminster from Oct. 25 until Nov. 11.
