The death of Trent Angus has prompted the province to start a coroner’s inquest in mid-Feb.
Angus, 33, was killed during the execution of a search warrant on Feb. 26, 2022.
The first day of the inquest is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The presiding coroner will determine subsequent start times.
Angus was wanted in a drug and firearm trafficking investigation. At 11:57 a.m. that day, the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) executed a search warrant at a quonset in Waseca. Three individuals surrendered immediately and were taken into custody.
Furthermore, while RCMP members stood outside, a gunshot fired from inside the structure and struck one officer. Angus then emerged, ignored police commands, and resisted efforts to subdue him with a less-lethal 40 mm foam projectile. Angus brandished a 9 mm handgun and fired at officers, prompting ERT members to return fire. He was fatally struck and pronounced dead at the scene.
Section 19 of The Coroners Act, 1999 states that the Chief Coroner may direct that an inquest be held into the death of any person.
The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is responsible for investigating all sudden, unexpected deaths. An inquest aims to establish who died, when and where that person died, and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
A public inquest into the death of Angus will be held Feb. 10 to 14, 2025, at the Dekker Centre, 1 – 623 Carlton Trail, in North Battleford.
