Smith to “protect” livelihood of Albertans

Alberta Premiere Danielle Smith says she will take action to protect Alberta from energy tariffs choosing to oppose a federal proposal.

She says the province cannot support Ottawa’s approach to tackling possible U.S. tariffs without some guarantees. She opposes federal proposals to restrict Alberta energy exports or impose export tariffs.

Smith met with other premiers to discuss strategies to address the incoming U.S. administration’s trade policies. Meanwhile, she described the talks as productive but criticized federal ideas as harmful to Albertans.

“Alberta will simply not agree to export tariffs on our energy or other products, nor do we support a ban on exports of these same products,” said Smith. “We will take whatever actions are needed to protect the livelihoods of Albertans from such destructive federal policies.”

Smith urged Canada to use this challenge to build infrastructure for oil, gas, and other natural resource exports. Additionally, she said reducing reliance on a single trading partner is critical.

The premier will visit Washington, D.C., this week for the U.S. presidential inauguration. She also plans to meet U.S. lawmakers in the coming months. Smith hopes to strengthen trade ties and argue against tariffs on Canadian goods.
