Multiple units, including members of the General Investigation Services unit, responded quickly to ensure public safety.

Police found the pedestrian and determined the object was actually a torch lighter.

Lloydminster RCMP would like to remind the public that while there are many items available for purchase that may seem harmless, if you choose to wave around or hold objects which appear to be a firearm, or any other type of weapon, RCMP must treat this with the upmost seriousness, every time,” said the RCMP in a statement.

Police urged people to think twice before displaying realistic-looking items in public, especially near parks or schools.

“Perceptions mean a great deal. When Police are called to a file such as this, we often have very little time—if any—to decide whether what you have is real or not,” stated the release.

“If you are confronted by police about having a potential weapon, understand police must treat this very seriously. Ultimately, we’re looking to reduce risk to the public, ourselves and you, so follow instructions from the police and stay calm.”

RCMP thanked the public for their patience and said no further updates are expected.
