The City of Lloydminster has dissolved the Friends of Cenovus Energy Hub Committee.

According to administration, the committee has fulfilled its purpose.

“The friends of Cenovus Energy Hub, formerly friends of Lloydminster place committee, has fulfilled its intended purpose,” said Joel Turcotte, the city’s director of recreation and cultural services.

The committee was first established in 2023 when the terms of reference were approved by council. Its intent was to plan and deliver sales and events to support the construction and opening of the new event centre and arena, now known as the Cenovus Energy Hub.

Fundraising and sponsorship events wrapped up for the project in December 2025. There’s no future fundraising events planned.

Turcotte also elaborated on what would happen to events the committee hosted.

“Weaver Park After Dark was a really good event started by the friends,” he said. “In the future, we plan to still operate that. I think we saw some success and we saw a lot of people.”

A committee faced a number of challenges, which the city is hoping to overcome in the future.

“The very specific challenge we had, municipalities aren’t technically eligible for lottery licenses,” said Tracy Simpson, executive manager of community development services. “So, things related to selling raffle tickets or putting something on an auction, we can’t do based on the way we set up the committee.

“That’s why we want to dissolve this one, do some research to figure out how to set it up so it can have more success in those areas.”

Lloydminster city council asked how much was left unsold from the committee’s fundraising efforts.

“I think we have about six dressing rooms and about three or four water filling stations left,” said Turcotte. “The new committee, if that’s what we choose to do, definitely could be selling those sponsorship opportunities.”

Although the committee is no more, the city is still actively selling sponsorship for those items.

“Our sponsorship co-ordinator in the city is actively trying to sell those spaces and they are still for sale if anyone’s interested,” he said.

Council voted in favour of dissolving the committee.
