Battlefords RCMP say officers were called at about 10:40 a.m. on May 3 to a reported disturbance. The initial call ended before further details were provided, but a second call shortly after reported a man had discharged bear spray inside a church.

Police responded to St. Paul’s Anglican Church on 99 St., where the suspect was being restrained by individuals inside a hallway when officers arrived. He was taken into custody without further incident, and bear spray was seized at the scene.

The church was evacuated, and emergency medical services treated those affected by the spray. Police say no other physical injuries were reported.

Investigators say early information suggests the incident was not motivated by hate. The investigation is ongoing as officers continue to speak with witnesses.

Charges have not yet been laid, and police have not released the identity of the suspect. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
