The funding, announced April 30, is being delivered to Hospitality Saskatchewan through the National Action Plan to End Gender-based Violence. The new industry-wide program is designed to help front-line staff recognize warning signs and safely intervene or report suspicious activity.

“Training front-line hospitality workers is a practical way to prevent human trafficking and protect people at risk,” said Alana Ross, the minister responsible for the status of women, in a news release.

Officials noted that trafficking often occurs in plain sight within local communities through hotels, motels, and restaurants, rather than only through international border crossings. Exploitation frequently involves false job offers or the manipulation of vulnerable individuals by people they trust.

Jim Bence, president and CEO of Hospitality Saskatchewan, said the funding allows the industry to equip those in the best position to spot “insidious” crimes.

“This horrific crime occurs throughout the country, including right here in Saskatchewan, in hotels, motels, Airbnbs, with transactions happening in bars, pubs, lounges and restaurants,” Bence said.

The province currently spends more than $70 million annually on initiatives to address interpersonal violence and abuse. This specific investment aligns with federal efforts under the National Action Plan to support survivors and improve the responsive justice system.

Justice minister Tim McLeod said the program will empower workers with the tools needed to foster “meaningful change” and support victims and survivors across the province.
