This year’s theme, “Be prepared. Know your risks,” serves as a province-wide call to action. Community safety minister Michael Weger emphasized the importance of self-sufficiency during the initial stages of an emergency.

“Emergency Preparedness Week is a time to build your family’s emergency plan and create a 72-hour kit for both your home and vehicle,” Weger said in a May 4 release.

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) is spearheading the campaign, providing resources and templates via its website and social media channels to help residents identify local hazards and develop response plans.

As part of the week’s activities, a scheduled test of SaskAlert, the provincial emergency alert system, will take place on Wednesday, May 6, at 1:55 p.m.

The test message will be distributed across:

  • Television and radio stations
  • Compatible wireless devices
  • The SaskAlert mobile app

The SPSA noted that regular testing is a standard requirement to ensure the system remains reliable for distributing urgent public safety warnings during real-world events.

Emergency Preparedness Week is a national initiative held annually during the first full week of May to increase awareness of the importance of individual and community readiness.
