Whether it’s a stop sign, traffic light, or pedestrian crossing, these devices are essential communication tools designed to regulate, warn and guide traffic safely.
“Traffic control measures are designed to help drivers make safe decisions,” said Karol Noe, executive vice president of vehicle and driver programs at SGI. “Even on familiar routes, missing a sign or signal can result in a collision.”
According to SGI, failing to yield the right of way accounts for 11 per cent of all collisions in the province. Additionally, disregarding traffic control devices contributes to four per cent of crashes, while driver inattention remains a leading factor at 11 per cent.
The provincial insurer is reminding motorists that these tools ensure everyone on the road knows who has the right of way, which reduces confusion and maintains a safe traffic flow.
“Slow down, stay focused and watch carefully for what the traffic signs are telling you,” Noe added. “It’s important to give the road your full attention to keep you and everyone else on the road safe.”
To stay safe behind the wheel, SGI recommends:
- Yielding to vehicles that have the right of way.
- Obeying all traffic lights and coming to a complete stop at stop signs.
- Avoiding distractions to stay focused on the road ahead.
By remaining alert, drivers can better protect passengers, pedestrians and cyclists. For more traffic safety tips, residents can visit sgi.sk.ca.
