Unpredictable June weather could not stop the community from celebrating the fifth annual Filipino Festival, which successfully pivoted indoors to the Cenovus Energy Hub on June 27.

The popular event, which showcases Filipino culture through traditional dances, songs, food and games, was nearly postponed due to heavy rain that rendered its usual outdoor park venue unfeasible.

Organizer Dowsan Antonio, speaking on behalf of the United Filipino Canadians of Lloydminster and Area (UFCLA), praised the quick actions of the committee, which began monitoring the forecast early in the week and secured the arena.

“This festival is more than just a celebration. It is a protection of who we are as Filipinos,” Antonio said, highlighting the event’s role in sharing traditions with the wider community.

“As Filipino-Canadians, we are so blessed to enjoy the best of both worlds — keeping our Filipino identity while contributing to the growth and diversity of Canada, our second home.”

Antonio expressed deep gratitude to local volunteers, vendors and sponsors whose financial support allowed the organization to absorb the cost of moving to the new venue, including the staging and sound systems.

He also gave a special mention to the Cenovus Energy Hub staff for accommodating the last-minute shift.

Lloydminster MLA Colleen Young commended the organizers for their seamless transition to the indoor facility and the surrounding parking lot. She also lauded the local Filipino community for its dedication to cultural preservation, comparing it to her own family’s history.

“One thing I really, really appreciate about the Filipino group here in Lloydminster: you are passing on your culture, your traditions, your food, and the family gatherings,” Young said. “Thank you for making Lloydminster your home.”

Young assured attendees that the celebration has become a permanent staple for the region, promising that the festival will return next year “come rain or shine.”
