Métis citizens in northern Saskatchewan will gain access to 12 new affordable housing units through a $3.26 million partnership between the provincial and federal governments and Métis Nation-Saskatchewan.

The provincial government announced the tiny home development Sept. 23 at an event in Buffalo Narrows, with units planned for La Loche, Cumberland House and Buffalo Narrows.
Six homes will be built in La Loche, three in Cumberland House and three in Buffalo Narrows, according to the announcement. The units are expected to be completed by spring 2027.
Funding partnership
The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are contributing $1.5 million jointly through the Rental Development Program and the National Housing Strategy-Saskatchewan Priorities Initiative.
Métis Nation-Saskatchewan is leading the project and contributing $1.58 million.
“These 12 new homes will create new housing opportunities for Métis citizens in northern Saskatchewan, while helping people remain connected to their families, culture and communities,” Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Terry Jenson said.
The homes will provide affordable rental housing for single Métis citizens with low incomes.
MN-S partnership
Métis Nation-Saskatchewan President Glen McCallum described the project as an example of effective partnership and self-government.
“Over the next week, we announce 12 new energy-efficient housing units in MN-S Northern Region 2 and Eastern Region 1,” McCallum said. “When construction is complete, the affordable rental homes will help individuals and Elders in Buffalo Narrows, La Loche, and Cumberland House manage the high cost of living.”
The project builds on an ongoing partnership between the federal government, Saskatchewan and MN-S to expand affordable housing access in northern Saskatchewan.
The initiative is part of Saskatchewan’s broader housing strategy, with the 2026-27 provincial budget allocating $17.6 million for repairs to provincially owned units and new affordable housing development through the Rental Development Program.
The Canada-Saskatchewan Bilateral Agreement, signed in 2019 under the National Housing Strategy, commits $610 million over 10 years, cost-matched between the federal and provincial governments.
