Sometimes it takes a major emergency to remind us just how much we rely on the people who run toward danger while the rest of us are told to stay back.
The Sept. 21 fire at Inland Steel was one of those moments.
Crews were called to the blaze around 3 p.m. and battled the fire for more than 12 hours before it was declared out early Sept. 22. Nine departments responded, with more than a dozen fire apparatus eventually working at the scene.

For the firefighters, RCMP, EMS, dispatchers and other emergency personnel involved, it was a long and demanding job that required teamwork and dedication.
So, this week, I think Lloydminster and the surrounding communities owe them a simple but important thank you. Thank you for answering the call. Thank you for working through the night.
And, most importantly, thank you for putting the safety of others before your own.
Our emergency crews deserve our appreciation every day, but incidents like this remind us why.
