Following a significant increase in interest, the province has hired more than 550 seasonal firefighters from a pool of 1,200 applicants — a 50 per cent jump in applications compared to last year. These crews will be supported by a network of specialized air resources and expanded municipal partnerships.

A key addition this year is the Mutual Aid Incentive Pilot, which offers municipalities up to $125,000 to cover immediate wildfire response costs. The program aims to eliminate financial hesitation when local governments need to request provincial assistance.

Alberta is also modernizing its fleet to ensure 24-hour suppression capabilities. Recent investments include:

  • Night-vision helicopters for around-the-clock aerial support.
  • Hoist-equipped aircraft to transport crews into rugged, inaccessible terrain.
  • A $400-million contract for five new, Alberta-made De Havilland waterbombers.

Minister of forestry and parks Todd Loewen stated the government is utilizing every tool available — from new technology to risk reduction strategies — to create a more “wildfire-resilient Alberta.”

The provincial government has allocated $169 million in Budget 2026 for wildfire management. This follows a $7-million investment in 2025 that established six new Wildland Urban Interface teams, which consist of municipal firefighters specifically trained to protect infrastructure and homes.

While crews are currently being deployed to airbases across the province, officials continue to urge Albertans to remain vigilant as the season begins.
