Fire crews in the County of Vermilion River (CVR) had a busy week with crashes, fires and a dog rescue.

On Thursday, July 17, fire crews responded to a call involving a dog trapped in a culvert.

Firefighters used machinery, shovels and hand tools to expose steel pipe before using cutting tools to safely remove the dog. The incident did not harm the dog.

Crews also responded to multiple major calls over the weekend of July 19 and 20, which began with a response by Blackfoot Fire and Rescue to a suspected hazardous materials spill.

Crews found organic material, not hazardous and Emcon Services handled traffic while a clean-up team took over.

A collision near Range Road 33 and Township Road 524 at 1:30 a.m. on July 20 required the assistance of Marwayne and Kitscoty firefighters. The RCMP and Madavie also attended the scene after reports of trapped individuals.

Paradise Valley Firefighters also responded to a fire at 2:20 a.m. the same morning.

Crews found a fully-involved farm implement fire near buildings and quickly extinguished the blaze to protect nearby structures.

While wrapping up from that call, dispatch sent them to a second blaze as a vehicle was burning near Highway 17 and Township Road 452.

Marwayne firefighters also responded to a leak from a transport truck shortly after 12 p.m., which was confirmed as hydraulic oil. They stopped the leak and provided traffic control until repairs were complete.

CVR crews also responded to several alarms and medical calls over the weekend.

The County reminds people to call 911 immediately if they see signs of fire or other emergencies.
