Mental health education is getting a boost in Alberta with a $10M investment from the provincial government. The funds will help create more space for post-secondary education in Alberta.
The investment supports 12 post-secondary institutions, creating 761 new seats in programs dedicated to in-demand mental health professions.
Impacted programs include psychiatric nursing, psychology, social work, child and youth care, and addiction counselling.
- The 12 post-secondary institutions receiving funding for additional seats are:
- Bow Valley College – 75 seats
- Burman University – 60 seats
- Grant MacEwan University – 90 seats
- Keyano College – 30 seats
- King’s University – 37 seats
- Medicine Hat College – 50 seats
- Mount Royal University – 105 seats
- Northwestern Polytechnic – 152 seats
- Portage College – 32 seats
- Red Deer Polytechnic – 70 seats
- St. Mary’s University – 45 seats
- University of Lethbridge – 15 seats
Funding will help institutions increase capacities, improve educational offerings and prepare mental health professionals for the emerging needs of communities.
“With a growing need for mental health services, this seat expansion will benefit families across the province,” said minister of mental health Dan Williams.
“No matter what part of Alberta someone calls home, they deserve access to consistent, high quality mental health care.”
According to the Alberta government, the profession’s enrolment expansion grant program is a critical step forward for more skilled mental health professionals in our province.
