The response to the City of Lloydminster's proposed Community Support Centre resulted in city staff hosting a meeting inside city hall on Sept. 16.
A few weeks ago, development officers at the City of Lloydminster received an application to repurpose the old CANSAFE Inc. building on 50 Ave.
According to documents provided at the meeting, the Lloydminster Men's Shelter is requesting to use the location for a Community Support Centre.
The Men's Shelter has said they are the ones looking to expand capacity and provide further services. A letter was sent out to affected residents within a 150 metre radius of the proposal. It was also announced in the Meridian Source.
Various social media groups obtained copies and the immediate feedback has been significant.
"We are seeking feedback from the community as a whole. It's not just the adjacent landowners," said Natasha Pidkowa, manager of planning for the city.
They have already received significant feedback from the community.
Throughout the meeting, officials reiterated the process. They explained what discretionary use means, what their role is, and how an appeal process works.
Pidkowa encourages the public to continue to send letters to the three development officers either for or against the proposal. She also noted the proposal was in the Meridian Source last week and will appear this week.
Public Response
Multiple individuals at the meeting shared concerns about the crime rate in the area as well as depreciating property values. Others were concerned about the location of the new facility.
Nearly everyone in attendance agreed the shelter needs somewhere to go, they just don't want it close to schools and other vulnerable populations.
If you want to express your opinion to the planning department it must be done by end of business day Sept. 26. The Meridian Source has spoken with many individuals regarding the application and will be bringing you more from both sides in the days to come.
