Awards season in the newspaper business is like Christmas in July. Each year, news outlets submit their best work hoping it will tickle the judges’ fancy.

Selecting submissions can be time-consuming and tedious, and the results are often unpredictable — sometimes they go your way, and sometimes they don’t.

As members of both the Alberta and Saskatchewan weekly newspaper associations, we at the Source get to “double dip” and enter in two provinces.

Last Friday, I found out I took first place in the Sports Action and Wildlife Photo categories of the Alberta awards. Needless to say, I was thrilled. While Alberta has yet to release the winners of its writing and general excellence awards, I have great faith in our team.

The Saskatchewan winners will be announced in the coming months, and I’ll be sure to let readers know how we fared in the photography, writing and general excellence categories.

While I have your attention, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Rotary Club of Lloydminster for inviting members of our team to speak to the club.

Chris, Jacie and I attended Monday’s meeting to talk about the changes at the paper and the feedback was nothing but positive.

Members of the business community voiced their understanding for making the change and David Lopez fined me $5 because now everyone has to learn how to start campfires without newsprint.

The Source team will be attending the Border City Rotary club’s upcoming Tuesday morning meeting and we’re still planning a second online education class for our seniors. We’ll publish the date everywhere possible once we lock one down.
