Conservative Shadow Minister Shannon Stubbs challenged the government on April 22, citing skyrocketing food costs and a growing affordability crisis.

“Canadians should be able to afford essentials themselves … The PM says he is like Canadian war hero Sir Isaac Brock. Well, people ration food in wartime, but the Liberals make Canadians ration it in peacetime, right?” Stubbs said.

She cited price increases since 2015, including beef rising 69 per cent, baby formula 84 per cent and eggs 44 per cent. Stubbs also criticized federal fuel taxes and regulations, arguing they add costs for producers and consumers.

“We are a year in. When will the PM drop photo ops and one-third measures, and cut taxes on food and fuel so Canadians can afford to thrive, not just survive?” she said.

Stubbs further questioned the government’s economic record, pointing to food inflation levels she said are the highest in the G7 for a fourth consecutive month. She also cited increases in fuel prices, including gasoline up 62 per cent and diesel up 93 per cent, and claimed $1 trillion in investment has left Canada since 2015.

The federal government has previously said its policies are aimed at balancing affordability with environmental and economic priorities.
