On May 20, the provincial government announced it is replacing 22 aging border crossing signs with a new design that prominently features the phrase “Strong and Free.”

Devin Dreeshen, minister of transportation and economic corridors, said the refreshed signs are designed to celebrate Alberta’s identity.

“Whether people are travelling from our Rocky Mountains, beautiful forests or our fertile agricultural lands, these signs will greet visitors and welcome Albertans home,” Dreeshen said.

The current wooden signs have welcomed travellers for more than 40 years but have reached the end of their lifespan due to decades of exposure to harsh weather, according to the government.

The replacement structures will be built using more durable materials designed to withstand the elements for decades.

A request for proposal has been issued to find a fabricator for the project. The total cost to replace the 22 signs is estimated at $3.5 million.

The new signs will be installed along major highway corridors at border entry points shared with British Columbia, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories and Montana.

Installation is scheduled to begin by fall 2026.
