On June 17, Lloydminster RCMP Staff Sgt. Bruce MacLean confirmed the investigation began on June 16. He emphasized the probe was initiated to determine the validity of the online accusations, noting no criminal offences have been identified at this point.
“Starting an investigation does not mean information has come forward verifying or disproving the online accusations,” MacLean said in a statement.
The Lloydminster Catholic School Division is co-operating with police and both parties are mutually ensuring there is no current risk to students.
The update comes as community members organize a rally, scheduled for June 17. MacLean said the RCMP have attempted to contact the organizer of the event to ensure the gathering causes the least amount of disruption to students.
While acknowledging the public’s right to peaceful assembly, police are urging people to stop spreading unconfirmed details online.
“Spreading unverified online rumours about a person has significant consequences on their personal and professional lives and does not set a proper example for the youth who may have legitimate concerns they wish to disclose,” MacLean said.
Police are requesting that the public allow a fair and impartial investigation to be completed before condemning anyone publicly or on social media. Anyone with firsthand knowledge of concerning behaviour is encouraged to come forward to the Lloydminster RCMP.
