The investigation, confirmed by police on June 16, comes as the Lloydminster Catholic School Division (LCSD) issued a statement acknowledging a “verbal interaction” captured on video involving one of its employees.
“This is a developing situation and the Lloydminster RCMP have begun an investigation to determine the veracity of the online complaints,” said Staff Sgt. Bruce MacLean.
He added that police are working in consultation with the school division, which he described as “extremely co-operative.”
In a separate statement, the LCSD said it has reviewed the video and consulted with legal and professional channels. The school division confirmed the interaction did not occur during school hours.
“There is no current safety concern related to the operations of our schools; however, the amount of misinformation regarding this is a concern,” the division stated, adding that the matter is being addressed responsibly in accordance with established policies and legal requirements.
“We recognize the importance of transparency and maintaining public trust and we want to assure our students, families, staff and community members that this matter is being addressed. The safety and well-being of our students remains at the heart of every decision we make. We take all concerns seriously and follow established policies, procedures, and legal requirements to ensure matters are addressed appropriately and responsibly.
“We understand there may be questions about this situation. To respect legal and privacy considerations we’re not able to share specific details or discuss individuals. As we approach the conclusion of another school year, our focus remains on supporting student learning, celebrating achievements, and ensuring a positive and successful end to the academic year. We remain committed to providing safe, welcoming, and faith-filled learning environments where students can continue to grow, learn, and thrive.
“We appreciate the concern, understanding, trust and continued support of our school communities.”
With final exams scheduled to begin Wednesday, both police and school officials are calling for calm. MacLean urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified information online or organizing public responses, such as protests, which could place additional strain on students.
“Exams begin tomorrow and we are requesting the public does not disrupt or add strain to the students during this already stressful time through furthering online rumours or protests,” MacLean said. “Please allow the police to investigate and maintain the integrity of our investigation without tainting potential evidence and witnesses.”
The RCMP is asking anyone who witnessed the alleged behaviour to come forward and speak directly with investigators.
