The Saskatchewan government has proclaimed Sept. 28 as Test Your Smoke Alarm Day, urging residents across the province to inspect their home fire safety devices.

The annual awareness day aims to ensure smoke alarms throughout Saskatchewan are properly installed, maintained, and operational.
“We know that smoke alarms save lives,” said Michael Weger, the minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency. “I urge residents of Saskatchewan to test their smoke alarms tonight and to make it a monthly habit. When it comes to safety, it is better to hear a beep today than a siren tomorrow.”
Data from the National Fire Protection Association indicates that working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a house fire by half.
Under Saskatchewan’s Building Code Regulations, all residential buildings are required to have working carbon monoxide and smoke alarms regardless of when the structure was built.
The province also expanded its safety standards in May 2026 with the introduction of Henry’s law. An amendment under the law requires every suite in multi-unit residential buildings to be equipped with a carbon monoxide alarm, regardless of location, effective Nov. 1.
