The Lloydminster and Area Brain Injury Society’s (LABIS) barbecue sold out May 3 during the city’s hazardous round up. In doing so, they raised over $1,000 for their organization.

“The city invited us to come run the barbecue for their hazard round up,” said Verna Haight, director of operations for LABIS, noting the city provided everything the organization needed to raise money for their group.

LABIS accepted cash from anyone in exchange for a hotdog or hamburger during a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

Haight said the city’s donation event helps LABIS in many ways.

“Not only does the money come back to a great cause, it stays local and helps us out,” she said. “Additionally, it gives us recognition. People come, we can talk about LABIS and let them know how important we are to the community.”

Haight also explained what LABIS does for those unaware of their local services.

“LABIS is a safe place for participants who have a brain injury to come and feel like they’re part of a family,” she said.

“Part of the community is about ensuring they’re being heard and understood. It’s a fun place for them to come and be themselves again.”

Haight explained their next big fundraiser is less than a month away and invited people to get involved.

“We have our golf tournament on June 5 at Rolling Green Fairways,” she said.

“You can help by sponsoring a hole, or putting in a golf team would be great. Come join us and have some fun.”
